Gillette ProGlide Versus Gillette Mach 3: Battle of the Razor Handles!

I am a very hairy guy and have personally tested every razor I can get my hands on. Gillette is by far my favorite brand of handheld razors, sometimes referred to as razor handles.

I am here to share my expertise with you and today I will be comparing the Gillette Proglide razor with the Gillette Mach 3 razor, after extensive testing in my bathroom laboratory.

While the Gillette Mach 3 has a more comfortable grip and feels heavier, the Gillette ProGlide easily wins this competition because the Proglide has five blades that pull less on your individual hairs while providing a closer shave.

I came to this conclusion because shaving comfort is about less pain. Once the shaving razor is pain-free then you can compare which razor handle is easier to hold.

Since you can feel more pain from the Gillette Mach 3 razor pulling at your hairs, I went with the Gillette ProGlide which was virtually pain-free, and that is why I am a fan of the 5-blade razor handles. Anyways we can talk about each razor to explore their differences…

The Winner! Gillette ProGlide

Sharp Blades – Just like the picture says, the blades are very sharp.

I know from personal experience. Like any razor, they will get dull over time but you just have to keep the replacement cartridges on hand.

The blades seem to last at least a month for me so it is really not expensive over time. I’ve used one of the Gillette razor handles over time and it lasted for at least ten years or more.

Flexball Handle – This allows you to press against your face and run the razor along your face without worrying about all of the contours in your face.

This feature was not a big deal to me but it did help because I am right-handed and can not bend my wrist back because of an old injury so it was neat to watch the razor adjust itself as I moved it along my face.

This technology also helps you to miss fewer hairs.

5 Blades – The 5 blades are anti-friction which allows them to slide easier along your face.

I know from experience that the blades are long-lasting.

I also know from experience that the main advantage of a 5-blade razor is a closer, more comfortable shave.

With the 5 blades, if you miss a hair with the first blade, there is no way you are going to miss the hair after the next four blades pass over it.

This also makes the shave more comfortable because you only go over with one pass and you don’t have to keep going over and over again like with a one-blade or even the 3-blade Mach 3 for that matter.

Enhanced Lubrastrip – This strip is supposed to lubricate your face as you shave and the color fades over time so you know you need to replace your razor.

The lubrication part, I think is overrated but I do appreciate the color fading as it reminds me that I need to replace it soon.

The lubrication has been updated though with a touch of mineral oil which doesn’t rinse out easily, remaining in the strip to help the razor slide easier.

If the razor is pulling at my hair too much and the color on the lubrastrip is fading, then I usually replace the razor cartridge mid-shave and carry on. You can usually tell quite a difference if you do this

Precision Trimmer – This is on the back of the razor and I usually use it at the end of shaving to touch up the edge of my sideburns. It’s not good for much else except for maybe around your nose.

What People are Saying About The Gillette ProGlide

My Husband says it’s the best he’s ever had.

You have to be careful when using this product. It has five sharp blades which can cut you.

I wanted to note that this is from a women that was using it for hard-to-reach places even though the razor is designed for a mans face. It still promotes the qulity of the blaades.

I decided to quit buying the single-use single-blade razors to quit throwing away so much plastic and now I finally have a closer shave than the cheap plastic one or an electric razor.

Disposable Alternative – Way closer and more comfortable shave than a disposable razor. The comfort and closeness are a huge difference.

If every shaver used disposable razors, that’s a lot of plastic to throw away.

3 DuraComfort blades – These are very strong long-lasting blades but are still designed for comfort of shaving.

Lubrication Strip – Helps keep your face lubricated while shaving and also keeps the razors from getting too close to your skin.

Advanced Skin Guard – Actually has fins that stretch your skin and prepares it to be shaved. Anyone who has shaven knows you can get a more comfortable closer shave if you pull the skin tight in front of your shaver and the Mach 3 does this for you.

What Some People Have Said About The Mach 3

Works Well

This is the one I was looking for…

It’s a razor with 3 blades. As advertised and described.

Why I Chose The Gillette ProGlide

First off, my daily razor is actually the Gillette ProGlide Power, which I began using because of the 5 blades that comes with the power of vibration to make shaving even easier.

The Gillette ProGlide is the clear winner because of the comfort it provides with the five blades. You barely have to press on your skin and pull slowly to give the 5 blades time to work.

I have really thick strong hairs on my face so before I started using the 5 blades my face would sometimes be a bloody mess, especially from disposable razors.

I don’t use anything but a 5 blade razor anymore because of the comfort and quickness it provides for me.

How To Shave With The Gillette ProGlide

When I shaved with the ProGlide, I shaved immediately after the shower and with shaving cream.

I shaved with the grain gently once and then went against the grain gently once, rinsing the blades after each stroke in warm water.

I then dried my face and applied some Gillette after-shave lotion.

Final Thoughts

As you can see above, I actually put the razor to the test myself, so you know I’m not just blowing smoke.

Some people just go through the Amazon reviews of a product and then talk about it like they actually used it.

The truth is that I test razors as part of my lifestyle because I have such thick hair and irritable skin that I figured I was the perfect test subject haha…

Anyways I hope I’ve made it pretty obvious that the Gillette ProGlide is the better shave because it offers the most comfort hands down.
